Mr Men Cookbook: Week 17 Part 1 Mr Funny's Fruit Scones

We pulled a double whammy this weekend to finish Squidge's mission to cook everything from the Mr Men Cookbook, so Part 1 of this today is Mr Funny's Fruit Scones.

We doubled the recipe again as most of the book's recipes make quite small batches. So to start with Squidge sieved 8oz of self raising flour with half a teaspoon of baking powder (we made our own with 2:1 cream of tartar to baking soda).

Then he weighed 2oz of margarine and added this to the flour mixture along with 4 teaspoons of sugar...

...and rubbed it all together until he had fine crumbs, then added 2oz of sultanas.

Then he measured out the 250ml of milk the recipe asked for (when doubled), and this went slightly awry for a while as, when poured into a well in the flour/marg mixture and mixed in, this essentially made dough soup. Which was not, in fact, what we were after. So we added the same again of all the other ingredients we'd already used (8oz flour, half a teaspoon of baking powder, 2oz margarine, 4 teaspoons sugar), and luckily when we mixed all this together we ended up with a good dough.
Squidge kneaded it for a bit...

...then rolled it to about a cm and a half thick...

...and cut out circles with a flour-dipped cutter (it made about 20 medium scones) and put them on a baking tray, then Moppet brushed them with a bit of milk.

Into the top of the oven on gasmark 8 for about 10 minutes and we were done!

We tried a couple warm with butter, and they were pretty good, especially seeing as we'd winged the recipe after the milk incident!

Part 2, and the last recipe in the book, later :)
